چکیده

Interictal spikes and sharp waves in human EEG are characteristic signatures of epilepsy. These potentials originate as a result of synchronous pathological discharge of many neurons. The reliable detection of such potentials has been the long standing problem in EEG analysis, especially after long-term monitoring became common in investigation of epileptic patients. The traditional definition of a spike is based on its amplitude, duration, sharpness, and emergence from its background. However, spike detection systems built solely around this definition are not reliable due to the presence of numerous transients and artifacts. We use wavelet transform to analyze the properties of EEG manifestations of epilepsy. We demonstrate that the behavior of wavelet transform of epileptic spikes across scales can constitute the foundation of a relatively simple yet effective detection algorithm.

Automatic detection of epileptic spike using fuzzy ARTMAP neural network

The present paper attempts to introduce a new approach for the automatic detection of epileptic spikes in EEG signal which plays a vital role in diagnosing epilepsy. In this approach, we have detected and classified epileptic spikes by using extracted features and Fuzzy ARTMAP neural network. The performance of classifying system is evaluated by three criteria of sensitivity, selectivity and sp...

Application of Fuzzy ARTMAP Neural Networks for Epileptic spike detection Using Wavelet Feature Extraction

This paper aims to introduce two different classifier systems based on fuzzy ARTMAP neural network for the automatic detection of epileptic spikes in 19-channel human electroencephalogram these algorithm (EEG) are fast and delivers satisfactory results. EEG signals are decomposed into 4 sub-bands by means of Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT). The inputs of the networks consist of two different f...

A Simple Wavelet Method for Automated Detection of Epileptic Neural Spikes in Electroencephalogram

In clinical diagnosis process of epilepsy, the physicians rely on tedious visual screening of long time recorded electroencephalograms (EEG) for detection and localization of important epileptic events. This process is very time consuming and there is also possibility of making wrong diagnosis owing to tiredness or to subjectivity of the specialist. Therefore, the computer-assisted diagnosis sy...

Removal of muscle artifact from EEG data: comparison between stochastic (ICA and CCA) and deterministic (EMD and wavelet-based) approaches

Electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings are often contaminated with muscle artifacts. This disturbing myogenic activity not only strongly affects the visual analysis of EEG, but also most surely impairs the results of EEG signal processing tools such as source localization. This article focuses on the particular context of the contamination epileptic signals (interictal spikes) by muscle artif...

Analysis and localization of epileptic events using wavelet packets.

This article compares results obtained in previous studies using time-frequency representations (Wigner-Ville, Choi-Williams and Parametric) and the wavelet transform with those obtained with wavelet packet functions to show new findings about their quality in the analysis of ECoG recordings in human intractable epilepsy: data from 21 patients have been analyzed and processed with four types of...
